Hi Megan: I'm a big fan of microfinance and Yunus, too. Glad to hear about Prospero Financiero. For an interesting case study about an experimental for-profit microfinance project that failed (and why), look up Calmeadow Metrofund. There's a link to a downloadable document at the bottom of http://www.gdrc.org/icm/calmeadow-metrofund.html .

My purpose isn't to bring a negative atmosphere to the topic, but the case study definitely is insightful and might be interesting to...Zopites? Zopeans? Anyway, I was also impressed that the Canadians who'd worked on the experiment took the trouble to then write all about it, about where they thought they went wrong, and publish it to the world for free, no less, so others could learn from what they did. Enjoy!

Couldn't agree more with the sentiment. Banks got confused about 'consumerisation' which they thought meant changing the relationship from one of trust based in a community (personified by the bank manager on his bike) to a relationship based on soul-less consumption of products. It was this that created the culture of miss-selling etc etc.

Good to hear that the mantra of human values of money is still strong inside zopa as it expands

if you want further evidence of the social dynamics of community then look no further than Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs.
