Its fairly common with conditions like Asperger's Syndrome. The sufferer will stick with food they know will not taste too strong. Unless he has other seriously disabling sysmtoms the condition might never be picked up. Certainly not in the UK - where the medical establishment regard anything more recent than the Four Humours to be newfangled American rubbish. :) He might well have a sensory overload problem.
