How to have a FeelGood food extravaganza for under £100

As part of Zopa’s mission to help the nation feel good about their finances, we commissioned the Ice Cream Index to identify the top 100 summer items that bring us the most happiness per pound. And for some inspiration for how to turn the Ice Cream Index into FeelGood summer days that don’t break the bank, we teamed up with some of our social media favourites to see what they did.

The Ice Cream Index found that tickets to food festivals and home-cooked meals both scored highly as FeelGood activities. So we sent Jen Stanbrook, a self-confessed interiors addict and table-setter extraordinaire, on a food-themed FeelGood day.

With change leftover from her £100 budget, she had a fab day out at a local food festival and created an insta-worthy home-cooked meal for her family of four.

Here’s what she did:

First-up, Jen visited The Taste of Rushcliffe Food Festival, near her Nottingham home. She spent a day browsing the locally sourced produce, watching cooking demos and even managed to sneak in a Pimms with a friend.

Shopping locally is a big FeelGood plus for Jen. Not only does she enjoy the browsing, but she’s able to buy her food plastic-free. She also kept an eye out for vegan food for her daughter. Although she wasn’t able to find a full meal for her, Jen was able to add some tasty treats to her haul for her daughter to share.

Food from festival: £75

Jen popped into a charity shop on her way home where she found a beautiful vase for just £3.50.  Charitable donations also took one of the top spots in the Ice Cream Index, so this added a FeelGood boost to her day.

She also bought some flowers to go in it, creating a beautiful centrepiece for her family meal.

Vase and flowers: £13.50

That night, Jen and her family enjoyed the results of her day’s browsing with an Ice Cream Index-approved, home-cooked meal that looked good and tasted even better. There were treats for everyone and fun family memories made as they tried some of the more exotic fruits Jen had found at the festival.

FeelGood day total : £88.50
